| Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Takes On Mickey Mouse | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Guests to Walt Disney World now have a chance to sit in the Hot Seat every day
A new attraction based on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire will open at the Disney-MGM Studios on April 7, 2001. In typical over-the-top Disney style, Imagineers have created an exact replica of the Millionaire set inside the Disney-MGM theme park. The only thing missing is host Regis Philbin; six castmembers will play host during 8-10 shows per day, entertaining 6,000 audience members. Disney's version of the game also has lifelines, but there are a few changes. Instead of "Phoning a Friend," contestants will "Phone a Stranger," using a phone that will be answered by someone standing in another part of the theme park. The Hot Seat contestant is chosen from the "Fastest Finger" round, in which the entire audience will participate. The attraction was built on Soundstages 2 and 3 of the studio backlot, and is three times larger than the actual set in New York. Although there are plans to use the new Disney facility for promotional events, there are no plans to move the actual show's production from its location in New York. What's the prize? Well, it's not a million dollars, but it's not bad. Resort guests who reach the top prize will qualify for the actual show. They'll also win a leather jacket and a trip to New York to meet Regis Philbin. Along the way, dollar amounts have been replaced with points which can be redeemed for prizes after the show. "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire :: Play It!" is a Fast Pass attraction. Fast Pass, a system introduced by Disney in the summer of 1999, cuts down on long wait times for popular attractions. Rather than waiting in a long line, park guests can obtain the Fast Pass at the attraction's entrance. The pass is imprinted with a time later that day. Guests can return at that time, skip the line, and go right in to see the show. "Millionaire" will be the 20th attraction to be equipped with the Fast Pass system.
